Is there a plan to update ESP8266_NONOS_SDK to 3.0.1 (latest)?

Is there a plan to update ESP8266_NONOS_SDK to 3.0.1 (latest)? Currently it seems to use version 2.2.0.

I recall esp8266 Arduino community was hesitant to update - there were reasons to do so. Unless I am missing something.
If they don’t, we’d refrain, too.
